Genesis 12:8

From there he went on toward the hills of east of bethel and pitched his tent, with bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

I. How did abram get stuck?Genesis 12:6 says Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. A. Notice every thing in Genesis is Great cause God lists it in Genesis.

1. this is one of several large trees in Canaan that were prominent at sacred places.

B. This was a center for the worship of pagan gods, a spot known at the locals.

C. Abram built an altar to the true God there – an implicit challenge to the false gods.

Abram took his mind off of God, the nation that God promised and built something else.

II. why did Abram build altars?Genesis 12:7 says The Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring, I will give this land. So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.A. Abram built the wrong altar!

B. This is the religious devotion in Canaanite culture was through sacrifices offered on an altar. .

1. We at times don’t put down religion and limit our selves to things that shouldn’t be.

2. God is not religion God is God who is with out limits and boundaries.

1. religion is anything that puts you in boundaries. also it can have a cult that you don’t know about.

C. But because the places and means used to worship false gods were not appropriate for the Lord.

If you need a false God just look at the world cause it a religion or things that don’t make God happy, but if you want a true God its Jesus. The one who died and rose for you! The one who loves you in and out of every day.

III. Did Abram ever build the right altar?Genesis 12:8 says From there he went on toward the hills of east of bethel and pitched his tent, with bethel on the west and Ai on the east.
